Madrid. Mexican photographer Graciela Iturbide and the National Museum of Anthropology (MNA) — represented by its director, Antonio Saborit, and the chair of its board, Madeleine Bremond — received the Princess of Asturias Award at the Campoamor Theater in Oviedo. Iturbide was honored in the Arts category, while the museum received the award for Concord.

In her speech, Graciela Iturbide paid tribute to Indigenous peoples and Mexican syncretism, while clarifying: “I have never constructed an image”.

"The most recognized part of my work portrays the Indigenous world of Mexico. I have dedicated my best years to it, and through it I have traveled much of my country — especially remote and disadvantaged regions where Indigenous peoples survive and resist. However, like the vast majority of Mexicans, I am the result of the fusion between two cultures, two worldviews that have almost always been in conflicto".

Not all honorees are given the opportunity to deliver a speech, but among those who did was photographer Graciela Iturbide, who said:

"I am grateful and deeply honored, but my merits do not go beyond these few centimeters of illusion, because there is no doubt: photography is not the truth, but the interpretation of a reality that the artist apprehends according to their knowledge, emotions, dreams, and intuition".
