An organ donor can save the lives of up to seven human beings; therefore, within the framework of World Organ and Tissue Transplant Day, which is commemorated this February 27, Oaxaca Health Services (SSO) recognizes and honors living donors, as well as the families of deceased donors.

According to the National Transplant Center (CENATRA), around a hundred Oaxacans are waiting for an organ, while at the national level, the figure rises to 18,834.

In 2024 and the first months of 2025, the Oaxaca Regional High Specialty Hospital (HRAEO) has performed eight kidney transplants from living donors, one autotransplant, as well as one procurement of tissue and skeletal muscle.

In the same period of time, the General Hospital of Zone number one of the Mexican Social Security Institute (IMSS) has carried out three procurement processes: one multi-organ and two tissue (corneas).

Strengthening the culture of organ donation

SSO explained that transplantation is a procedure through which an organ, tissue or set of cells is transferred from a donor to a recipient; or, from one part of the body to another in the same patient.

As the governing entity in matters of health in the state, SSO works in coordination with CENETRA and various institutions in the sector to strengthen the culture of organ and tissue donation for transplant purposes.

On this day, February 27, which celebrates the World Day of Organ and Tissue Transplantation, SSO said it recognizes the professional and human commitment of the medical staff specialized in this type of surgery, of the hospital coordination in donation and transplantation, and of the multidisciplinary team that saves lives through this noble work.

How to be an organ donor?

Donating organs is an act of love and transcendence. If you wish to continue the legacy after death by donating organs, you can register on the official CENETRA website and notify your family of your decision.
