Although the recognition is limited to 15 municipalities, it marks the tenth state in the country to obtain the DOM.

The Mexican Institute of Industrial Property (IMPI) has granted the Denomination of Origin (DOM) recognition to the mezcal produced in 15 municipalities in the southern region of the State of Mexico: Almoloya de Alquisiras, Amatepec, Coatepec Harinas, Ixtapan de la Sal, Luvianos, Malinalco, Ocuilan, Sultepec, Tejupilco, Tenancingo, Tlatlaya, Tonatico, Villa Guerrero, Zacualpan, and Zumpahuacán.

As part of the recognition, Governor Delfina Gómez received the Denomination of Origin certificate for mexiquense mezcal this Wednesday from the Secretary of Economy, Marcelo Ebrard, and the IMPI director, Santiago Nieto.

“We are talking about a tradition that goes back to our ancestors, to pre-Hispanic times, when the Indigenous peoples who lived in these lands already knew the maguey plant, cultivated it, and made use of it. From then until now, without interruption, from grandparents to parents and from parents to children, this knowledge has remained alive”.

The State of Mexico began the process to obtain the mezcal Denomination of Origin in 2016. In 2018, a favorable resolution was issued, but it was challenged, initiating a legal battle that lasted nearly a decade. In 2024, a court ruling ordered IMPI to issue a new determination based on technical and scientific studies to confirm that mezcal with identity and quality was indeed produced in 15 municipalities.

Only now has a multidisciplinary team — made up of experts from the National Polytechnic Institute (IPN), the Technological Institute of Tlajomulco, and the Polytechnic University of Atlautla — completed field and documentary research.

State of Mexico Becomes the Tenth State with a DOM

The State of Mexico is now the tenth entity in the country to obtain a Denomination of Origin, joining Oaxaca, Guerrero, Durango, San Luis Potosí, Zacatecas, Michoacán, Puebla, Tamaulipas, and Guanajuato.
